What is Historical European Martial Arts, or HEMA?

HEMA clubs practice archaic martial arts from Europe. HEMA mostly refers to swords, but can also include wrestling and the like. HEMA is not one style or type of martial practice, and HEMA clubs emphasize different things.

Our goal in the 1595 is to swordfight in a way that acknowledges the reality of sharp swords, but is also fun. And to get healthier and enjoy life more, by knowing and training with nice and skillful people.

We have a deep curriculum, generated over decades of study by Chris Chatfield, with exercises and drills designed to illuminate various aspects of fencing. Our practices typically divide 50-50 between technical drill and free-fencing.
